Blogging from the 37th International Film Festival Rotterdam

Blogger Macauley Peterson wraps up the 37th International Film Festival Rotterdam

Your Typical French Sex Farce: A scene from "Un baiser s'il vous plait"

The Independent's Randi Cecchine and Macauley Peterson posted blog entries from the 37th International Film Festival Rotterdam this February. They covered new films from Greece, Israel, Iraq, Spain, and Argentina, and topics of conversation at the festival, including the trials of collaboration, the evolution of copyright law, and the joy of breaking taboos. To view trailers for some of the films screened at the festival, including Lynch, Tale 52, and Un baiser s'il vous plait (shown at left), check out our Watch page.

During my brief stint at the Rotterdam Film Festival this week I selected my films without any particular governing principle other than, perhaps, variety: An Iraqi documentary, an Argentine midlife crisis drama, a French sex comedy, a Spanish zombie horror flick, a Greek psycho-mystery, a musical not-quite-biopic, and a contemplative Israeli film of cultural understanding. Did I mention zombies?

Best Documentary Candidates Culled to 15

Contenders include "For the Bible Tells Me So" and "The Rape of Europa"

Making the cut: A still from "The Price of Sugar", Bill Haney's Oscar hopeful.

The fifteen films in the running for the Oscar for best feature-length documentary include The Price of Sugar (pictured at left), about a Spanish priest who ministers to workers on Dominican sugar plantations, The Rape of Europa, a history of Hitler's plunder of European art treasures, and No End in Sight, the powerful Iraq War exposé that is Charles Ferguson's film debut. The latest work from previous winners Michael Moore and Steven Okazaki is also in the mix.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the five nominees for best feature-length documentary will be drawn from the following 15 films, listed here in alphabetical order:

1. Autism: The Musical

Filmmaker: Tricia Regan

The story: A woman works with five Los Angeles children, all of whom are diagnosed with autism, to put on a musical play.

Plot Points: "Lars and the Real Girl"

Does screenwriter Nancy Oliver of "Six Feet Under" fame push the suspension of disbelief a step too far?

First, let me start by saying that I was utterly, utterly charmed by Lars and the Real Girl, the new movie starring adorable Ryan Gosling as a sadsack office worker and much-ignored younger brother whose yearning for affection leads him to order an inflatable sex doll. He then asks the world to accept "Bianca" as his girlfriend.
